Strictly's Darcey Bussell nearly DIED during dramatic childbirth: "I feel very lucky to be here"
As a Strictly Come Dancing judge, she appears to have it all.
But Darcey Bussell has revealed she almost died during childbirth - and is only alive thanks to the skill and quick-thinking of specialist doctors.
The 48-year-old suffered with pre-eclampsia during her first pregnancy in 2001 and says the near-death experience now makes her appreciate good health.
Speaking to the Daily Star , she said: “My first child was premature and I had pre-eclampsia and I nearly didn’t get through that.
"I could have gone into a coma at any second. So I feel very lucky to be here… not to be over dramatic but I did nearly die. I was very lucky."
She added: “I was fortunate in that I was so drugged-up, which meant I wasn’t conscious when it was happening. I didn’t know what had happened until afterwards. So I was quite lucky in that. I didn’t realise the panic that was happening.”
Thankfully, talented medic Mark Johnson oversaw the dramatic labour, which eventually saw her become a mother to daughter Phoebe.
She added: “Mark saved my life. I don’t mean to be over-dramatic he certainly did. I owe everything to him.
“When I had my baby nearly two months early somebody died in another hospital of the same issue. And that’s because it was totally undetected. So I’m just lucky that Mark was totally aware of what was going on with me."
Thankfully, she has since made a full recovery and went on to have a second child, Zoe, with husband Angus Forbes in 2008.
Darcey is considered one of Britain's greatest ballerinas of all time, having worked for the prestigious Royal Ballet company before bowing-out in 2007.
She replaced Alesha Dixon on Strictly in 2012 following previous guest stints.
